Born in 1993 in Lomé (Togo). Lives and works in Lomé (Togo).
Thierry Tomety, a self-taught artist, is engaged in a profound existential quest. His works represent his connection to nature, exploring the beauty and complexity of existence through environmental materials, serving as a cathartic expression of his perceptions.
In resonance with the philosophical ideas of Merleau-Ponty and Gilles Deleuze, the artist highlights art as a mental and conceptual portrait. Thierry Tomety's work, therefore, is not just a representation; it becomes its own language, a sign of his time, an exploration of human depths that invites deep reflection. Through his sculptures and paintings. Thierry Tomety offers a sensory experience where art mirrors our emotions, grounding his practice in a continuum of aesthetic and existential inquiries that transcend time and space.
His work has been showcased in institutional exhibitions at the Palais de Lomé , at the Montresso* Art Foundation and a residency at Art Omi in New York in 2022. He was also a finalist for the Ellipse Art Prize 2023.
My work is quite reflective. I understood quite early that my practice was influenced by my subconscious. Art therefore revealed itself as a medium of dialogue and inner discovery.
Sometimes, I find myself lost in the shapes that unfold around me. In those moments of contemplation, I feel a profound connection between my subconscious and the natural world. It is as if the space around me whispers its secrets through my mind, revealing intriguing facts and coincidences. My ultimate purpose is to unveil the beauty and the unique creativity of the nature through my art.
I question the concept of "Creation" which, for me, is an act of materialization from nothingness. I materialize works that come to life through an impression of degradation and maturation, using materials that I find in my environnement. I distort them, merge them, to extract works that mimic life.
